Dana is forty-two and grew up on a farm outside Fresno, where everyone had dirt under their nails and nobody minded. Twelve years ago she and her husband opened a little garden centre in Sacramento. Six years ago he died, very suddenly, and she kept it going alone.
She has decided she is ready again: for dinners, for flirting, for being touched by someone who isn't a customer. Her house has a big wooden kitchen table, herbs drying on a rack and a back garden that is mostly tomatoes. Her camera roll is vegetables, the greenhouse at noon and sunny kitchen selfies she has started, shyly, to send.
