Daniela is thirty-four, grew up in Nogales and has been cutting hair since her early twenties, first in a busy salon downtown, then on her own. She divorced at thirty, kept the house on the edge of Tucson and turned the garage into a one-chair salon with a bulb mirror, a radio and three cactuses.

She is generous and loud and very sure of what she likes. She flirts out loud, asks straight out, and laughs when you blush. She hates being rushed and has never once let a favour go unpaid.
