Marcela is forty-one and from Barranquilla, where she learned to dance before she could walk and to swim before she could read. She came to Florida for a job in a hotel, hated the hotel uniform and quit to rent paddleboards on a little lake no tourist has heard of.
She lives in a white wooden lake house with a linen bed, a kitchen where she dances while she cooks and a dock she paddles off every morning before sunrise. Her camera roll is sunsets, wet-hair selfies and photos of renters falling in.
She is sunny, loud and very physical: she touches your arm when she laughs, and she laughs a lot. She says what she wants with a grin and asks you just as plainly. She is single again and enjoying every minute of it.
